Metabolism vs. Metabolic Health And Why the Difference Matters in Complex Chronic Illness

We hear these two terms used interchangeably almost every day, in patient intake calls, in wellness articles, and even among clinicians. Metabolism and metabolic health sound like the same idea wearing two different names. They are not. Understanding the difference is not just a matter of semantics.

In our latest article, we dive into why, for patients living with complex chronic illness, this distinction can be the difference between a diagnosis that makes sense and years spent being told your labs are normal while you feel far from well.

Tick-Borne Illness Global Summit

Dr. Eric Gordon and Dr. Nafysa Parpia will be participating in the upcoming Tick-Borne Illness Global Summit, discussing key treatment therapies and tools.

Dr. Gordon will be presenting on Plasmapheresis Advanced Therapy for Lyme & Tick-Borne Illnesses. Dr. Gordon shares that plasmapheresis does not directly cure Lyme disease. Instead, it serves as a tool to help restore more optimal immune function, creating conditions that allow other treatments to work more effectively. By removing inflammatory mediators and immune complexes from the bloodstream, plasmapheresis can help quiet the overactive or misdirected immune responses that characterize chronic tick-borne illness.

Dr. Parpia will be presenting on Bioregulators & Peptides for Lyme and Tick-Borne Illness. Dr. Parpia will share that, when addressing Lyme and tick-borne illness, peptides and bioregulators are best understood as part of a broader care process. They are not a standalone treatment for most patients with Lyme and tick-borne illness. Used thoughtfully, they can be an important facet of a broader healing protocol, helping patients move beyond symptom management toward more complete recovery.

Nervous System Dysregulation and Healing Trauma

The nervous system's role in chronic illness is often overlooked, yet it may be the crucial missing piece in many healing journeys. When our body remains in a defensive state, it creates an environment that can resist even the most promising treatments. For many struggling with complex conditions, addressing nervous system dysregulation might be the key that unlocks their body's natural capacity to heal.

Our friend Alex Howard is hosting the upcoming Heal Your Trauma Summit October 19 - 25, where he will explore the far-reaching impacts of trauma.

Not Magic, Not a Cure: The Honest Truth About Plasmapheresis

Dr. Eric Gordon joins Dr. Jason Bradley and James Chester on the Get Better Faster podcast to explain what plasmapheresis or therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) actually removes, from albumin-bound toxins to senescence-associated proteins, and why he's candid that it's "not magic" and "not a cure on its own."

Drawing on over 40 years of treating complex chronic illness, Dr. Gordon covers mitochondrial function and the Cell Danger Response, the value of pre- and post-treatment testing, and how to select and prepare the right candidates.

Hey Jimi,

Have you ever skipped cooking a healthy meal because you didn't have time to make the "right" one?

Or felt like one off-plan weekend meal meant you'd blown it, so you might as well start over Monday?

I've been there.

That's why I was so excited to sit down with Dr. Alona Pulde, a physician you may know from the documentary Forks Over Knives, to talk about something that doesn't get talked about enough: perfectionism, and how it can hold us back.

Here's what I loved about our conversation. Dr. Pulde has spent years helping people eat whole-food plant-based, and she sees the same pattern I do. It's rarely a lack of knowledge that trips people up. It's the all-or-nothing mindset.

One of the key things we talked about is how longterm consistency creates so much more success toward your goals, than trying to be perfect in the short term which is hard to sustain and often doesn't last.

Our interview is featured on her blog, in a post called Healthy Meal Prep Ideas for Low-Energy Weeks. I think it's the perfect home for it. As she and Dr. Matt Lederman put it:

"Please don't turn meal prep, or eating plant-based, into one more standard to fall short of."
The post is full of simple, oil-free ideas for the weeks when you have fifteen good minutes, not four hours. Think sheet-pan tofu and sweet potatoes, slow cooker lentil soup, freezer burritos, overnight oats, and even a "snack plate dinner" with hummus and veggies.

And my favorite reminder from it: convenience is not cheating. Buying pre-chopped onions so you actually make dinner? That's a win.

👉 Watch our interview and grab the meal prep ideas here

You don't have to be perfect. You just have to keep showing up.

Some weeks you'll prep like a pro, and some weeks dinner will be toast and a banana. Both count. Progress, not perfection.

Hit reply and tell me: where does perfectionism show up for you?

The other day I was walking through the grocery store and saw these fruit snacks that said they were “MADE WITH REAL FRUIT.”

I picked up the box, flipped it over, and saw the first ingredient was corn syrup. The second was sugar.

Then came modified corn starch, artificial flavors, and artificial food dyes.

Are you kidding me?

I put those suckers right back on the shelf. If I want to give my kids fruit, I’ll give them some strawberries or a banana!

Then I saw some “SUGAR FREE” pudding.

I went to check the ingredients and instead of sugar, it was chock full of ingredients like artificial flavors and artificial sweeteners like aspartame.

Aspartame and other artificial sweeteners have been linked to cancer in some studies.

No thank you. I’ll take real food over that any day.

And then I saw some “ALL NATURAL” pretzels that looked like they might be good for the kids.

I turned those over and found bleached enriched flour, soybean oil, and high-oleic soybean oil.

Most soy is grown from GMO seeds doused in pesticides and bleached flour has been processed to death in a factory. How exactly is that “all natural”?

Have you ever felt like this at the grocery store?

You’re bombarded with labels like “made with real fruit,” “sugar free,” and “all natural” that make a product sound good...

And then you read the ingredient list and find out it’s actually full of ultra-processed chemicals.

I don’t want you to be duped by labels like this that you’ll find all over the grocery store.

And the first step is knowing what those labels really mean.

And that’s exactly why I included a Label Decoder in the grocery shopping system I’m giving you FREE when you pre-order Food Babe Feast.

I break down confusing labels you see all over the grocery store, so you know what they really mean and what to look for before you put something in your cart.

And the Label Decoder is just ONE part of my grocery shopping system.

You’ll also get my actual brand list with the exact brands I personally buy and trust, my Grocery Aisle Playbook showing you how I shop every aisle, and my Terrible 20 List of the processed ingredients I refuse to buy.

Get Food Babe Feast and I’ll give you my entire grocery shopping system FREE.

Hi Jimi,

What if you could recognise dysregulation in real time - and know what to do next?

In our upcoming free live workshop, this is exactly what you'll learn.

Over 3 hours, we'll teach you how to identify fight, flight, freeze and fawn responses as they happen, map trauma patterns, apply the RESET framework, sequence interventions, and so much more. Through a combination of teaching, demonstrations and exercises, you will experience the Therapeutic Coaching® approach rather than simply hearing about it.

Whether you're already working with clients and want to expand your toolkit, you're considering adding Therapeutic Coaching® to your existing work, or you're exploring a new direction in your career, this workshop will give you a first-hand experience of the approach and how it can be applied in practice.

The workshop is on Monday, October 5th at 4pm BST / 11am EDT / 8am PDT, and is completely free to join.

COVID hospital protocols. A MAHA breaking point. The fight over vaccine mandates. And what women should know before getting a mammogram.

The COVID hospital protocols roundtable put families, doctors, and lawmakers in the same room to confront a question America has avoided for years: What really happened once patients entered the hospital?

Del breaks down the testimony and why the fight for answers is far from over.

Then, a crack in MAHA. Dr. Robert Malone joins Del as doctors and scientists demand Secretary Kennedy take action on mRNA technology, or risk losing the coalition that helped build the movement.

Plus, Zach Lahn on the battle to end vaccine mandates, a new CDC report on youth mental health, and breast surgeon Dr. Jennifer Simmons on the mammogram question and the imaging option she believes every woman should know about.

On behalf of all of us, Thank you for your support, now, and in the future.

Sometimes, we need permission to pause

Sometimes, someone says something so ordinary that it opens a door in your mind.
“I watch my favorite show while I eat breakfast.”

In the middle of a stressful week, hearing that can feel like a light switching on.

Oh. I could do that, too.

The possibility was always there. Somehow, hearing someone else say it makes it available to us.

When we’re carrying a lot of responsibility, even small pleasures can start to feel like things we have to earn. We’ll rest when the work is finished. We’ll enjoy ourselves when everyone is taken care of.

And the list keeps growing.

As a husband, father, and someone who cares deeply about his work, I recognize how easily a day fills with commitments. I also see how much we ask of ourselves, often without stopping to consider whether those expectations leave room for being human.

Parents may recognize this moment: you finally sit down to enjoy something, and your child calls for you. You love them. You go to them. You also feel frustrated because you were looking forward to a few minutes of your own.

Then you feel guilty for feeling frustrated.

There is room for all of those feelings. You can love your family deeply and need time for yourself. You can be grateful for your life and feel tired by its demands.

Perhaps someone’s casual comment about breakfast and a favorite show is enough to remind us that enjoyment belongs in an ordinary day.

What small pleasure have you been waiting for permission to enjoy?

And could you give yourself that permission this weekend?

That same kindness matters when we forget something important, lose patience, or wish we had handled a moment differently.

I keep coming back to three words: acceptance, forgiveness, and repair.

Acceptance helps us acknowledge what happened honestly. Forgiveness allows us to meet ourselves and others with compassion. Repair asks us to take the next caring action.

Sometimes that means an apology. Sometimes it means listening, changing a habit, or following through on something we meant to do.

We have opportunities every day to return to the people and things that matter to us.

A difficult moment with your child can be followed by a conversation and a hug. A forgotten message can still be sent. An unmet commitment can be acknowledged, with a thoughtful plan to follow through.

Repair gives us somewhere to go with our regret. It allows us to learn and reconnect.

This weekend, consider choosing one small thing for your own enjoyment and one thing you would like to repair. Both deserve a place in your life.

And when you catch yourself thinking, I should have done this sooner, take a breath and ask:

What caring step can I take today?

To Living Long and Living Well,

Hey Jimi, get a load of this guy...

That guy was me at 26, two days before Christmas 2003.

Unfortunately, my Christmas present that year was colon cancer.

A week later, I woke up in the hospital with a third of my large intestine removed. And it was worse than they thought. The cancer had spread to my lymph nodes... I was stage III.

The doctors told me my next step was 9-12 months of chemotherapy, which they said would only give me a 60% chance of surviving five years.

Like any cancer patient, I was shocked and confused. I didn't understand why all this was happening to me, but I remembered Romans 8:28, which says,

"We know that God works all things for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

My faith was tested.

And I chose to believe that God would turn this bad thing into something good.

I was deeply afraid, but I prayed for guidance and followed the path the Lord provided. I opted not to take chemotherapy, choosing instead to make radical changes to my diet, lifestyle, attitude, emotions, spiritual life....

I changed everything. And I trusted God to lead me in the process.

Today, over 20 years later, I am cancer-free and in the best shape of my life, and I've been able to reach millions of people with my message of hope and healing.

And my wife Micah and I also have two beautiful daughters: Marin and Mackenzie

If I had made different choices, those girls wouldn't be here today, and I probably wouldn't be either. He worked it out for my good!

While learning how to heal cancer holistically, I realized I had to change my entire life. Some of those changes I made were quick and easy; others took a little time. But one thing I want you to understand is:

I am not lucky or special.

If I can do this, you can too. :)

And I'm going to teach you what I've learned.

Wherever you are in your health journey, I want you to believe — to KNOW — that healing is possible.

That’s why I’m giving you free online access to my SQUARE ONE Healing Cancer Coaching Program starting Tuesday, October 13th, 2026.

I'll see you there!
