Good Old Times

Five familiar faces. A whole lot of late Saturday nights.
Bill Murray, Jane Curtin, Gilda Radner, Garrett Morris, and Laraine Newman—together in a circa 1970s photo that takes you straight back to SNL’s early days.
The Coneheads. Roseanne Roseannadanna. Emily Litella. Nick the Lounge Singer. Weekend Update.
You stayed up to watch it live, then repeated the funniest lines with your friends the next day. Sometimes the cast could barely keep a straight face—and that only made it funnier.
Which sketch or character takes you right back?

November 8, 1975. it’s SNL’s fourth episode—and the debut of the Land Shark.
A knock at the door. “Candygram.” Gilda Radner opens it anyway.
Chevy Chase, wearing a giant foam shark head, devours her.
A door, a ridiculous disguise, and a shark making house calls. Somehow, that was enough to turn one word into an unforgettable joke.
If you watched it, you still can’t hear “Candygram” without thinking of that door.

We're not on a mission from God...
The suits came off. The sunglasses stayed on.
John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, and the Blues Brothers band making towels look like an official dress code. Jake and Elwood even kept their hats.
“Everybody needs somebody to love.” These guys also needed shirts.

Two wild and crazy guys, 1977 and still going decades later.
Georg and Yortuk Festrunk made their SNL debut September 24, 1977 — Steve Martin and Dan Aykroyd playing Czechoslovakian brothers utterly convinced American women couldn't resist their disco shirts and tight slacks. Every single sketch ended the same way: toasting each other and declaring, "We are two wild and crazy guys!" They were wrong every time, and it never stopped being funny.
The bit blew up so big that Martin named his 1978 comedy album after it, and people were still calling him a "wild and crazy guy" in headlines decades later. The brothers came back for victory laps too — 1998, where they finally landed the girl (Cameron Diaz), and again in 2013 for SNL's Five-Timers Club episode.
Nearly 50 years later, this duo still holds up as one of the funniest the show ever made.
