Do honey bees really taste through their feet?
Believe it or not… yes, they do!
Honey bees have tiny hair-like sensors (like taste buds) that help them distinguish sugary flavors from salty ones. Using different parts of their tarsi, along with their mouthparts and antennae, bees can “taste” nectar the moment they land on a flower — helping them decide instantly whether it’s worth collecting. Pretty amazing, right?
And here’s another cool fact…
As the queen moves through the hive, she leaves behind a special scent on the comb. This is called footprint pheromone, and it’s one of the ways she keeps the hive in check.
Worker bees pick up this scent through the receptors on their feet and antennae.
It tells them:
🐝
The queen is alive and well
🐝
Where she’s been in the hive
🐝
And it helps keep everyone working together smoothly
If that scent fades, the workers quickly notice — that’s one of the first signs to them that something’s changed in the colony.
Bee Haven 2026
So yes, bees literally taste with their feet. It’s how they explore flowers, sense pheromones, and stay in tune with their queen. These little pollinators are full of surprises!

Octopuses don’t have tentacles.

The most distinguishing feature about an octopus is its set of eight appendages — they’re right there in the name. But don’t confuse that tangle of limbs for tentacles, because octopuses don’t have those. They have arms. For us armchair biologists, the two words seem interchangeable, but there’s an important difference.

Female dragonflies fake their deaths to avoid unwanted mates.
By Nicole Villeneuve
If someone you weren’t interested in was pursuing you and couldn’t take a hint, would you play dead? That’s exactly what female moorland hawker dragonflies do. Also known as common hawkers, these dragonflies have been observed suddenly dropping out of the sky, crashing to the ground, and lying completely motionless when an overly enthusiastic male is trying to mate.

Once the male loses interest and flies away, the female gets back up and takes off. This trick is particularly useful if the female has already mated and is looking for somewhere to lay her eggs; repeated mating attempts can injure females, so rather than risk another unwanted encounter, sometimes the safest thing to do is to play possum.

Your dad's engine choice told on him.
10 options. One showroom. One year.
Grocery-getter or fire-breather. Dad decided.
Chevrolet’s 1965 Impala order form listed 10 different engine options. Which option the buyer chose said a lot about that person.
Here’s how the lineup went.
At the very bottom was the 283 ci V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor, producing 195 hp. A sensible choice. The kind of dad who looks at the price tag first.
One step up was the 327 ci engine with a 4-barrel carburetor, producing 250 or 300 hp. Same Impala, but way cooler.
At the very top was the 396 ci Turbo-Jet. It was released on February 15, produced 325 hp, and replaced the 409. Before the 409 was discontinued, only 2,828 Impalas and Super Sports were produced with this engine. The gearshift was a 3-speed manual mounted on the steering column, unless, of course, you paid extra for a 4-speed, Powerglide, or Turbo Hydra-Matic.
In the hardtop model, when you lowered the side windows, there were no pillars left to block the breeze.
Anyone could buy the same Impala. Only your engine revealed who you were.

Certain drinks make humans more attractive to mosquitoes.

There are a few ways to avoid the itch-inducing bites of summer’s biggest pest: the mosquito. Wearing long-sleeved apparel and dousing yourself in insect repellent can help, but avoiding certain beverages might further protect you. According to research into mosquito biting preferences, one drink in particular makes humans more attractive to the paltry pests.

In a world inundated with ads, it’s rare for one to become an indelible part of the cultural landscape. Yet amid the sea of print ads and commercials that have launched over the years, a few outliers have managed to stand out from the crowd, lodging themselves in the collective consciousness and successfully changing the conversation.
