The studio wanted a younger act. The filmmakers wanted Aretha Franklin.
When The Blues Brothers was being made, Universal suggested Rose Royce in her place. Director John Landis and Dan Aykroyd stuck with the Queen of Soul.
Aretha played Mrs. Murphy, who runs a diner with her husband, Blues Brothers guitarist Matt “Guitar” Murphy. When Jake and Elwood arrive in their dark suits, she takes one look and says they look like they’re from the CIA.
Then they try to take Matt back on the road. “Don’t you blaspheme in here!”
Aretha wanted to sing “Respect,” but Landis had written “Think” into the scene. She made it unforgettable. Aykroyd later said watching her film the number left him so overwhelmed he nearly forgot to get up and dance.
She owned the diner, the song and the scene.
What’s your favorite Aretha line or moment in The Blues Brothers?

67 years ago today, October 15, 1959, "The Untouchables" premiered on ABC, with Robert Stack starring as federal agent Eliot Ness.
Produced by Desilu and based on the memoir by Ness and sportswriter Oscar Fraley, the crime drama followed Ness and his team of incorruptible agents as they battled Al Capone, Frank Nitti and other gangsters in Prohibition-era Chicago. Columnist Walter Winchell narrated each episode in his rapid-fire style.
The series grew out of "The Scarface Mob," a two-part film that aired on "Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse" earlier that year. Stack won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Series in 1960. The show was also criticized for its violence and its portrayal of Italian Americans.
"The Untouchables" ran 118 episodes over four seasons until May 21, 1963. #OnThisDay#October15#TheUntouchables#RobertStack
