Some of Hollywood's most famous lines, the ones that have permeated pop culture, have gotten twisted over the years. What did Ilsa really say to piano player Sam in Casablanca? If Darth Vader never really said "Luke, I’m your father" in The Empire Strikes Back, what did he actually say? Why do we quote Dorothy’s "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore" line incorrectly in The Wizard of Oz? Here are 10 famous movie lines that aren’t quite the way we remember them.

Fact of the Day

Honey badger skin is thick enough to withstand machetes.
By Michael Nordine
If you remember that brief, glorious time when you couldn’t open a web browser without being treated to videos of honey badgers going absolutely bonkers, you may be unsurprised to learn their skin is thick enough to withstand blows from a machete. These notoriously fearless carnivores are also known for feasting on venomous snakes whose poison they’re resistant to, picking fights with larger predators such as lions and tigers, and having claws that can outgrow those of a black bear’s.

Should you ever be unlucky enough to encounter one in the wild, you’d be better off running — whatever weapon you may have on you, it’s probably not nearly as tough as the honey badger.

Maryland’s state sport is jousting.

When you think of jousting, you probably picture medieval tournaments with knights galloping headlong toward armored opponents, aiming wooden lances, and smashing against each other in an explosion of splinters, sometimes with deadly results. So how did this form of combat training, which originated in France in the 11th century, become the state sport of Maryland?

Why Don’t We Write in Cursive Anymore?

For generations, American children learned to loop their letters into graceful, flowing words — a marker of both education and refinement. So how did cursive, once a cornerstone of education, fall out of favor? And is there any chance it will return?

Photosynthesis requires carbon dioxide and sunlight, but in hot climates, losing water vapor is a serious concern. Succulents have adapted to this by only opening the pores in their leaves (stomata) at night when the sun isn’t shining. They take in carbon dioxide molecules and store them in a unique arrangement until the sun rises, then close up to conserve water. Once the sun is up, the photosynthesis process begins using the available sunlight and the stored carbon dioxide.

In many ways, the 20th century was defined by groundbreaking scientific discoveries and revolutionary new technologies. When the century began, the industrialized world was still using the steam engine, and as it came to a close, the digital age had ushered in transformational new inventions.

Fact of the Day

Starfish pump seawater through their veins instead of blood.
By Bennett Kleinman
While starfish have plenty of limbs, they’re sorely lacking in other biological departments. For instance, these unique sea creatures don’t have a brain — or even blood. Instead, starfish are able to move, breathe, and feed thanks to the life-sustaining seawater coursing through their veins.

Starfish possess what’s called a “water vascular system,” which is also present in other echinoderms such as sea urchins and sea cucumbers. This system is composed of a series of water-filled canals, and as seawater passes through the canals, it delivers nutrients and oxygen to the starfish. The water vascular system also aids in locomotion: As sacs within the system contract, they push fluid into the starfish’s feet, allowing those limbs to elongate and grab onto their surroundings.

It took a long time for scientists to fully wrap their heads around bird migration, and ancient scholars had some wild ideas about what happened to birds in the winter. The Greek philosopher Aristotle, who was among the first to scientifically study bird migration, came up with a few theories, including one that seems especially wacky today.
