Fact of the DayMammals
Wolves don’t actually howl at the moon.
By Tony Dunnell
We’ve all seen the classic image of a wolf silhouetted against a full moon, its muzzle raised in a long, powerful howl aimed at Earth’s milky-white satellite. This romantic image, however, is factually misleading, as wolves don’t really howl at the moon. In fact, scientists have found no link between the moon and howling, save for a possible increase in overall wolf activity — including, but not limited to, howling — on brighter nights.

The reason wolves howl is actually all to do with long-distance communication, with no mystical lunar shenanigans involved. They howl to signal their location to other pack members and to rally the pack for a gathering or a hunt. It’s also a clear way to warn rival packs not to encroach on their territory.
Why do some wolves become “lone wolves”?

There’s no slow motion in real life, but World War I engineers managed the next best thing. Known as synchronization gear, the technology allowed warplanes to fire machine guns through their own propeller blades without hitting them. But how?

Candy corn was originally called ‘Chicken Feed.’

Candy corn may be the most maligned confectionary — it’s rare that the tricolored treat ever tops the list of beloved Halloween candies. Yet somehow it returns with flair each fall, an unyielding symbol of the season. While the waxy, triangular kernels have essentially remained the same since their creation in the 1880s, one thing has changed about candy corn: its name.

I don't blame the AI, I blame the person who put in the prompt to the AI not checking the output before posting.

The jack-o’-lantern has its roots in Irish lore — specifically, the legend of a man called “Stingy Jack,” who tried to trick the devil and suffered the consequences. There are many versions of the tale, but here’s the gist.

Jack-o’-lanterns come from an Irish myth about a man named Stingy Jack.

No matter what face you carve into your Halloween pumpkin, it will probably be called the same thing: a jack-o’-lantern. But how did spooky illuminated squash get that name? Turns out, the term we use to describe glowing pumpkins comes from Stingy Jack, the main character in a centuries-old Irish myth about making deals with the devil.

Fact of the Day

Black cats can 'rust' if they spend too much time in the sun.
By Michael Nordine
If a black cat ever crosses your path, don’t be scared — be curious as to whether their fur has changed color. This is called “rusting,” and it happens when they spend so much time in the sun that portions of their coat take on a brown, orange, or even reddish tint.

The pigment responsible for black fur is called eumelanin, and it isn’t especially hardy: Repeated exposure to ultraviolet rays causes it to break down and lose its dark hue. The change can also be caused by an amino acid deficiency, but this is less common. Rusting is also easier to spot in direct sunlight, meaning these kitties will remain as spooky as ever under cover of darkness.

Why do some Coke bottles have yellow caps?

If you see Coca-Cola in your grocery store with a yellow cap, it means that the sip is kosher for Passover. Passover is a Jewish holiday that takes place in the spring and celebrates when Moses liberated the Jews from slavery in Egypt.

Like other Jewish holidays, there are specific dietary requirements associated with Passover. The version of the story that they teach in Hebrew school is that when the Jews fled Egypt, they could not wait for their bread to rise. So they packed unleavened bread for their journey, which is why Jews eat matzo during Passover and don’t eat any leavened bread products.
