Look at a map of the United States and you’ll see almost every letter of the alphabet represented in the 50 state names. Only one is absent — a letter so rare, it appears in less than 1% of the main entries of the Concise Oxford Dictionary’s 2004 edition. Benjamin Franklin wanted to omit it from the alphabet entirely.
