My guest today on the podcast is Martha Carlin, a microbiome researcher whose husband was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at just 44 years old.

That diagnosis sent Martha on a 24-year quest for answers.

She became an expert on how our modern diet, environmental toxins, and pharmaceuticals disrupt the gut and lead to neurodegenerative diseases. Martha has collaborated with leading researchers, published in medical journals, and spoken at TEDx and the White House.

Martha and I had a fascinating conversation about what she’s learned and what she wishes she had known when her husband was first diagnosed.

My dad passed away from Parkinson's in 2020, so this interview was especially meaningful to me.

If you’re interested in protecting your gut, strengthening your immune system, and preventing neurodegenerative disease, this interview is for you. :)

Topics include:
-Early warning signs of Parkinson's
-How modern food harms the gut
-The gut bacteria Parkinson's connection
-Marathons increase colon cancer risk
-How keto and low-carb diets harm the gut
-What alcohol does to the gut
-My dad's Parkinson's decline
-Constipation: an early warning sign
-Restoring a healthy microbiome
-Antimicrobial properties of food
-Exercise for Parkinson's patients
-Singing and humming for the vagus nerve
-Oral health and the gut microbiome
-Are microbiome stool tests worth doing?

And more!

Tony Lyons Blasts Big Pharma, Big Food and Big Ag at CHD Conference in DC

In a wide-ranging speech at the CHD Conference on Sept. 17 in Washington, DC., MAHA Action president Tony Lyons extolls a government system that willfully caused America’s chronic disease epidemic.

Imagine…

It’s a weeknight.

You’re at home, nice and snug on the sofa, watching your favourite Netflix series.

Suddenly, a wave of intense fear, dread, and helplessness sweeps over you.

Your heart is banging against your chest.

Your whole body is shaking.

You try to fight against it, yet this makes it worse.

You’re trapped.

If you suffer from stress, anxiety, panic or trauma…

… moments like this can happen, whether you’re at home, at work, or at the supermarket.

It can be extremely distressing to experience.

What makes it worse is you can live in constant fear of the anxiety, stress, or panic coming back.

If this ever happens to you, don’t worry.

There’s a simple explanation.

And once you understand it, you regain your sense of control.

You’ve probably already guessed what it is.

“Your breath.”

If your normal way of breathing is chaotic, then without realising it, you’re putting your body under stress.

You see, most people breathe poorly.

This puts your nervous system on high alert!

And this happens with every breath you take

This is why you can be watching Netflix, and feelings of overwhelm can come out of nowhere.

Luckily, there is a simple way to overcome this.

Gum Disease.

Missing Teeth.

Dental Materials.

Dental Procedures.

All of these are linked to heart disease, cancer, dementia, and more.

Which is why it is important to learn the truth about teeth & modern dentistry.

The Dental Health Docu-Class will reveal all the dangers of dentists.

Discover why putting toxic dental materials in your mouth can kill you.

And why natural alternatives should be used instead of common procedures like root canals, crowns, mercury fillings, and even cleanings.

These procedures can affect your long-term health, often creating hidden oral infections that lead to serious chronic disease.

Choosing the right dentist is important, and this docu-series will show you how to find a dentist who uses safe biological and holistic dental practices.

You'll be shown the link between oral health and conditions like chronic fatigue, heart disease, cancer, dementia, diabetes, and autoimmune disease.

You'll see hard data that will change your dental habits, such as learning that gum disease doubles your risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke.

And you'll find out why conventional dental exams routinely miss hidden infections, and the methods you should be using to look for dental problems.

It's all here in the Dental Health Docu-Class, and is essential viewing for anyone with dental issues, chronic health concerns, or wants to stay safe.

Early registrations for the Dental Health Docu-Class are now open.

Three Benefits of Edamame

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

Edamame beans, often served as an appetizer in Japanese restaurants, are chock-full of nutrients and disease-fighting power. One cup of edamame has only 180 calories, but has 8 grams of fiber to fill you up and a whopping 17 grams of protein.

Special: Your Body's Primary Defense Center Resides in Your . . . Bowels?

These green powerhouses are also gluten-free and high in heart-healthy fatty acids. Here are three of the amazing health benefits of edamame:

  1. Fights inflammation. If you are not a big fan of eating fish but still want to get omega-3 fatty acids from natural sources, turn to edamame. Not only are soy products high in protein and low in fat, they are also great for those who suffer from inflammatory diseases, such as arthritis.
  2. Protects against stroke. According to The Beet journal, edamame is rich in folate, a mineral that has been linked to reduced cardiovascular disease because of its ability to lower homocysteine levels.
  3. Promotes weight loss. Edamame is fiber-rich, which helps you feel fuller, longer. Fiber also slows the absorption of nutrients in the body, which helps you avoid a spike in blood sugar or a surge in insulin.

I want to challenge one of the most persistent ideas in autoimmune care.

There is no autoimmune diet.

There are dietary strategies that can help calm immune activity in a particular person, based on their physiology, triggers, nutrient status and what they can tolerate right now.

That distinction matters.

If you work with people whose autoimmune symptoms improve, plateau or keep flaring, save your seat for The Autoimmune Breakthrough Masterclass here.

Take two people with the same diagnosis.

One may thrive with more fiber and fermented foods. The other may become more symptomatic because their digestive terrain isn’t ready for either.

One may feel better with fewer carbohydrates. Another may experience disrupted sleep, increased stress signaling and worsening symptoms with the same approach.

And sometimes the person who appears to need an even stricter elimination diet has already removed so many foods that inadequate protein, minerals, essential fatty acids or other nutrients have become part of the clinical picture.

This is where dietary strategy becomes clinical reasoning.

More restriction isn’t necessarily more therapeutic.

The goal is to understand what is provoking immune activity, what is supporting resilience and what the person in front of you can actually use at this stage of healing.

That’s one of the areas we’ll dig into on September 22.

The Autoimmune Breakthrough Masterclass

Tuesday, September 22
6:00 PM ET / 5:00 PM CT / 3:00 PM PT

90 minutes, live, with time for your questions

I’ll show you how I think about less obvious dietary triggers, nutrient gaps that can interfere with recovery and why two people carrying the same diagnosis may need very different nutritional strategies.

Most women start looking for information about menopause after the symptoms show up - which is a bit like reading the map once you’re lost.

As it stands, tens of millions of women enter menopause each year.

And according to statistics, a substantial share of them will experience symptoms they’d describe as moderate to severe.

For something this common, the education most women get about menopause is next to none.

The Future Of Meno(Pause) Medicine Summit is here to change that.

Whether you’re 35 and noticing your sleep has changed or 55 and years into this, this weekend you have a chance to watch the entire event at no cost.

Register to watch this weekend and discover how to gracefully navigate these changes.

Here’s a taste of what you’ll find:

→ What perimenopause can look like in your thirties and early forties, years before anyone calls it menopause

→ Which foundations to put in place now: sleep, muscle, stress, nutrition, nervous system

→ How hormones connect to bone, heart, brain, and metabolic health over the long run

→ What’s worth tracking, and where clinicians disagree about what tracking can tell you

Watch it all this weekend only.
