Diabetes Drug Reduces Arthritis Knee Pain

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

Metformin, a drug that is commonly prescribed to help lower blood sugar levels in people with Type 2 diabetes, reduced knee arthritis pain during a six-month treatment period, potentially delaying the need for knee replacement surgery.

“Metformin works in a number of ways on the knee, including affecting low-grade inflammation and other metabolic pathways that are important in knee osteoarthritis,” said senior researcher Flavia Cicuttini, a professor at Monash University in Australia. “It is a different way to treat knee osteoarthritis pain.”

Researchers recruited 107 overweight or obese people with knee pain and randomly assigned about half to take metformin pills and the rest a placebo. The metformin group reported a 31-point reduction in pain after six months, compared with a 19-point reduction for the placebo group.

Special: Finally, A Natural Way to Help Reverse Diabetes.

The results showed that metformin is a potentially new and affordable way to improve knee pain from arthritis.

Treatment options such as acetaminophen, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and topical creams tend to have small benefits. As a result, people tend to seek knee replacement surgery as soon as possible when arthritis pain becomes unbearable.

“Why did I get cancer?”

[td]
Hey Jimi,

“Why did I get cancer?”

It's the number one question on every patient's mind after a diagnosis…

Was it genetics?

Something toxic I was exposed to?

Alcohol?

Smoking?

Stress?

Bad luck?

Or something I don't even know about?

The frustrating reality is that cancer doesn’t come with a receipt telling you where it came from.

Many factors increase cancer risk—age, genetics, environmental exposures, infections, diet and lifestyle factors, and other biological processes.

Researching the known causes of cancer helps you identify and remove them from your life.

And the next question to ask is…

“What can I do to help myself heal?”

That's the question my friend Chris Wark became obsessed with after he was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer at just 26 years old.

After surgery, Chris was told he needed chemotherapy, and that he had a 60% chance of living five years, barely better odds than a coin toss.

With his life on the line, Chris chose a different path. He said no to chemo, and he radically changed his diet and lifestyle and did every natural and alternative therapy he could find and afford.

He didn’t just survive; he thrived.

Today, 23 years later, Chris is still cancer-free and in the best shape of his life.

And he's spent the last two decades researching the factors that reduce cancer risk and improve survival—mindset, nutrition, exercise, stress, environment, supplements, faith, and more.

Because you can't change your age.

You can't change the genes.

You can't change your past.

But you can change your mindset, your attitude, and your daily routine going forward.

And your choices today affect your future.

Chris organized his two decades of research on prevention and survival into a program called SQUARE ONE.

This course will teach you how people are overcoming cancer against the odds, and the common threads all exceptional survivors share.

And this month, Chris is putting the entire SQUARE ONE program online for FREE for 10 days.

Whether you're currently dealing with cancer, supporting a loved one, or simply focused on prevention, SQUARE ONE will teach you evidence-based diet and lifestyle strategies that can reduce your risk of ever getting cancer and increase your odds of survival if you’ve been diagnosed.

Watch Chris's story + get your free pass to SQUARE ONE here »

Kim

P.S. We may never know exactly why one person gets cancer, and another doesn't.

But we do know, thanks to science, what we can do to significantly reduce risk and increase survival. SQUARE ONE is a powerful program.
