Our Health

Hi Jimi,

Imagine being in your 60s, 70s or 80s and still being able to comfortably bend, lift, garden, travel, exercise, and enjoy all the activities you love.

What can you do NOW to greatly improve your chances of maintaining that strength, mobility, and independence for decades to come?

That's the focus of an important FREE online training happening TOMORROW, Thursday, October 29, featuring spinal health specialist Dr. Yonatan Whitten, who has over 20 years of clinical experience.

→ Discover How to Keep Your Spine Strong, Healthy & Mobile as You Age -- learn more & sign up for the free training here if interested

Now, let me share something remarkable that helps explain why I think you'll find this training especially valuable.

Researchers reviewed 33 studies involving more than 3,100 people who were NOT experiencing back pain.

They found that by age 80, an estimated 96% had signs of spinal disc degeneration.

Think about that.

Their spines showed changes that many people associate with serious back problems, yet they weren't experiencing back pain.

So what's the difference between people who remain strong and mobile well into their later years and those who become increasingly limited by pain, stiffness, and loss of mobility?

And how much control do YOU have over which path you take?

These are central questions Dr. Whitten will explore in tomorrow's free training.

You'll discover:

→ The 4 key factors that influence whether your spine remains strong and resilient as you age—and what you can do to support them.

→ What surprising research reveals about spinal aging, including why even significant changes in your spine don't necessarily mean you'll experience pain or lose mobility.

→ Why some of the most common approaches to spinal health miss important pieces of the puzzle—and what you should know instead.

→ The practical steps you can take to help protect your spine and maintain the freedom to move, lift, exercise, and live independently for years to come.

→ Discover the 4 Keys to a Stronger, Healthier Spine—Reserve Your Free Spot Here

Whether you're already experiencing back or neck discomfort, are noticing that you're not as flexible as you used to be, or simply want to stay strong and active for the rest of your life, I highly encourage you to attend.

The Healthy Spine for Life training takes place TOMORROW at 4:30 PM Pacific / 6:30 PM Central / 7:30 PM Eastern.

And again, it's completely free.

FINALLY, because smiles and laughter are always "good medicine"...

Here's an on-topic dad joke that makes my wife and kids laugh and is worth sharing with YOU...

I didn't think I needed advice on how to fix my posture.

But I stand corrected.

;-)

P.S. That finding about 96% of pain-free 80-year-olds is a powerful reminder that changes in your spine don't necessarily dictate how well you'll move and feel as you age.

Hi Jimi,

A recent study that followed 10,000 women over 36 years found that the women who experienced two or three major stressful life events had a 24% higher risk of breast cancer.

This raises some important questions about how emotional stress affects our health.

My guest on this week's podcast, Dr. Shamanie Frykman, spent nearly five years under intense stress as her marriage fell apart. In the midst of a painful divorce, she was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer.

Shamanie had surgery but walked away from chemo, radiation, and tamoxifen. She took massive action, making radical changes to her diet and lifestyle, while working through years of fear, anger, and resentment.

In our interview, we talk about her holistic healing journey, radical forgiveness, overcoming fear, and the importance of faith and emotional healing.

This one is so good. Don't miss it!

Hi there, Jimi,

Some people in their 80s and 90s stay remarkably sharp, active, and full of energy, and scientists are studying exactly why. Researchers call them “Super-Agers,” and while genetics play a role, their everyday habits seem to matter too: staying physically active, keeping their minds challenged, nurturing close relationships, and eating well. The encouraging part is that many of these habits are ones you can start building today.

Hi ,Episode 6 of the Food Matters Live Series is ready to watch, and it tackles a question I hear all the time: why does my body still ache, bloat, and hold onto weight when I’m doing everything right? So often, the answer I keep coming back to is stress. Not only the stress you feel, but the stress your body is still carrying. A stressful thought sets off a physical response, and when that response never fully switches off, it can show up in the gut, in the joints, and around the middle, in ways that don’t look like stress at all. That’s why treating each symptom on its own so often brings only short-term relief.

Purna Pareek is a Silicon Valley engineer and serial entrepreneur who was diagnosed in May 2019 with Stage 4 glioblastoma, one of the most aggressive brain cancers, carrying a prognosis of six to twelve months, followed the same year by a second, unrelated invasive bladder cancer.

Rather than choosing between conventional medicine and everything else, he did both: he completed Phase 1 of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy st UCSF while building a parallel daily practice he calls the MEDS Method — Meditation, Exercise, Diet, and Sleep.

His recovery maps closely onto the Radical Remission healing factors: taking control of his health, radically changing his diet, following his intuition, releasing suppressed emotions, deepening his spiritual practice, leaning on the support of his family, and holding fast to strong reasons for living — including walking his daughter down the aisle three months after diagnosis.

His first clear scan came in 2020, one year after surgery, and his imaging has shown no evidence of disease ever since, now seven years past a prognosis measured in months. He tells the whole story in his book Radical Healing: A Stage 4 Cancer Survivor's Holistic Blueprint for Recovery and Renewal (2026), and speaks to patient communities, healthcare organizations, and corporate audiences on integrative healing and resilience.

Hiya Jim!

When I started physical therapy this spring, I went in assuming I’d be told to rest. Take it easy. Stop doing the thing that hurts.

Instead I got handed exercises. And homework. And the mildly irritating news that the problem wasn’t that I’d done too much — it was that I’d gotten weak in places I hadn’t been paying attention to.

Somewhere in there I realized I’d quietly accepted a story about my body: that at this stage, the job is to manage decline. Protect what’s left. Avoid what hurts.

Turns out that’s not the job at all. Which brings me to this week’s video.

I sat down with Will Harlow, a physiotherapist in the UK who has built his entire career around people over 50. He’s seen a few thousand of us by now, and he’s watched what happens when someone gets told their pain is “just age” and believes it.

He also has a 94-year-old client who got stronger.

Ninety-four. Let that sit for a second — especially if you’ve been telling yourself you missed your window, or that strength training is for people who already look like they strength train.

We got into the muscle loss nobody warns you about, what actually reverses it, and why “it’s just your age” is usually the least useful thing a person can be told about their own body.

I walked away from this one genuinely fired up. I think you will too.

Happy Wednesday Jimi,Bumblebees might be the last animals you’d expect to play with toys. Researchers gave them tiny wooden balls, and what they did without any food reward is pretty fascinating.
Every Wednesday I take one of these topics further inside the new Earth Conscious Life community. Here's what we're getting into this week.
🐿️ CREATURE FEATURE 🐿️Vampire squidVampire squid live in deep ocean waters where oxygen is scarce. They use two long, sticky filaments to collect “marine snow,” the bits of dead plankton and other organic material drifting down from above. When threatened, they can fold their webbed arms over their body or release a cloud of glowing mucus to distract predators. Those adaptations help them survive in a part of the ocean most animals couldn't tolerate.

  • Measure first. A small humidity gauge, called a hygrometer, can help. Around 30–50% is a general guide, but turn the humidity down if windows or nearby surfaces become damp.
  • Keep it clean. A dirty humidifier can send bacteria or mold into the air you're breathing.

Dear Jimi,

A warm midweek hello from the Zonia team :)

We wanted to share something with you today because this study genuinely stopped us in our tracks...

Researchers recently swapped the diets of African Americans and rural Africans for just two weeks – and the results were staggering.

Within 14 days, the group eating the rural African diet experienced:

- Less colon inflammation
- Improved gut bacteria
- A dramatic drop in cancer risk markers

Meanwhile, the rural Africans who ate a standard American diet saw their colon cancer risk skyrocket.

In just two weeks, everything got worse 😳

What was the difference?

Fiber-rich, plant-based foods vs. processed Western meals. The evidence couldn't be clearer.

Here's a little preview of the foods featured in the report 👇

Hey there,

Imagine waking up to a flat tire, a delayed train, and spilled coffee. We all face days where the universe seems to conspire against our schedules. While you cannot stop the flat tire, you can dictate exactly how you react.

This might sound like standard self-help advice, but recent science suggests it is a measurable biological asset. Perceiving control over daily stressors is not just about feeling good. It is a potent, cultivated skill that significantly impacts how we age.

According to a recent study, this mindset shift offers tangible cognitive benefits. Let’s explore why taking the steering wheel during stressful moments is a premier habit for long-term healthspan.

The 62% Problem-Solving Boost

Researchers analyzed how people handled everyday problems and their internal sense of control. The findings were striking. On days when individuals felt a greater sense of control over daily stressors, they were 62% more likely to resolve those problems.

Think of your brain like a budget manager handling your body's energy. When you feel helpless, the manager panics. It freezes accounts, spikes cortisol, and pushes you into cognitive inaction. You are locked in the passenger seat.

When you perceive control, the manager authorizes resources. This unlocks the cognitive bandwidth needed to find a logical solution. By believing a situation is manageable, the brain shifts from a passive threat-response into an active problem-solving mode.

Why Age is a Surprising Advantage

In cognitive science, youth is often associated with faster processing speeds. However, this study highlighted a beautiful plot twist. The relationship between perceived control and problem resolution actually grows stronger as we get older.

Older adults who exercised this sense of control experienced an amplified benefit compared to younger counterparts. Why does this happen? It likely comes down to a rich reservoir of life experience.

Older individuals have survived a lifetime of flat tires and unexpected crises. They have the historical data to know most daily stressors are survivable. When they apply a sense of control, they pair it with deep emotional regulation, leading to highly effective problem-solving.

Is This Just Positive Psychology?

It is crucial to ground these findings in reality. This research is based on human behavioral observation, not clinical trials of a new therapeutic compound. There is no effortless cheat code for eliminating the biological toll of chronic stress overnight.

If you are dealing with profound grief or systemic hardship, simply thinking positive is not a substitute for professional support. However, for the micro-stressors of daily life, perceived control acts as a potent behavioral intervention. It is about identifying the levers you can actually pull.

What You Can Do Today

Building this healthy-aging skill requires consistent practice. You must train your brain to hunt for actionable elements within chaotic situations. Here are several evidence-based protocols to develop a stronger sense of daily control:

  • The Circle of Influence Audit: When a sudden stressor hits, immediately grab a physical piece of paper. Draw a vertical line down the middle of the page.
  • Categorize the Chaos: On the left, list things you absolutely cannot change. This might include the weather, a coworker's bad mood, or a delayed flight.
  • Identify the Levers: On the right, list things you can actively influence. This could be your tone of voice, your backup plan, or your breathing rate. Commit your energy to the right side.
  • Implement the 90-Second Rule: Neurologists suggest that the initial chemical rush of a stress response lasts about 90 seconds. When something goes wrong, set a silent mental timer.
  • Ride the Wave: Do not try to fix the problem or react during this minute and a half. Let the cortisol wave pass, then ask yourself what your next right move should be.
  • Micro-Wins Strategy: If you are overwhelmed by a massive problem, break it into absurdly small tasks. If you have a stressful presentation, your first task is not to write the entire speech.
  • Create Momentum: Your first task is simply to open a blank document. Achieving that micro-win restores your sense of agency and gets the cognitive momentum rolling in your favor.
  • Reframe the Narrative: Shift your internal vocabulary immediately. Instead of calling a situation a complete disaster, try framing it as a complex puzzle where you only need to figure out the first step.
Consistent Habits Over Instant Cures

Mastering your sense of control will not happen by accident. It requires daily repetitions, much like lifting weights at the gym to build physical muscle. Some days you will still feel like a helpless passenger in a chaotic ride, and that is perfectly human.

The primary goal is simply to recognize the steering wheel more often than you used to. By slowly expanding your perception of control over daily annoyances, you are actively protecting your cognitive bandwidth.

You are giving your brain the remarkable gift of resilience. This ensures you can navigate the aging process with far greater confidence and grace.

  • Hey Jimi,Most people think they don't need to learn about cancer until they have cancer.I think that's a huge mistake.Because the worst time to start learning about cancer is the day you're diagnosed.Think about it.One day, life is normal. The next, you're sitting in a doctor's office hearing words you never expected to hear.Suddenly, you're trying to understand a diagnosis, make sense of treatment options, and make some of the biggest decisions of your life. All while dealing with fear, uncertainty, and information overload. Now imagine how different that experience could be if you already knew what questions to ask, what your options were, and what you could do to support your health. That's the power of being informed BEFORE you need to be.And that's why I want to tell you about Chris Wark.Chris was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer at just 26 years old. After surgery, he declined chemotherapy and radically changed his diet and lifestyle.More than 20 years later, Chris remains cancer-free.And he has spent over two decades researching nutrition, lifestyle, and holistic approaches to health, sharing what he's learned with people around the world. He put those lessons into a 10-module program called SQUARE ONE.It's designed to help people become more informed, take an active role in their health, and understand the lifestyle factors they can influence. And this weekend, you can watch the entire program for FREE.October 30 – November 1.All 10 modules. Three days. No purchase required.Think about that for a moment. You can learn from more than 20 years of Chris's research and personal experience without spending a dime. You may never need this information because of a cancer diagnosis. I hope you don't.But if that day ever comes for you or someone you love, wouldn't you rather have some of that knowledge already? And even if it never does, there are valuable lessons about nutrition, lifestyle, and taking better care of yourself that you can start applying right now.Watch the FREE SQUARE ONE screening hereYou don't have to wait for a diagnosis to start taking your health seriously.KimP.S. Chris shared this message he received from a SQUARE ONE member..."I first came upon this program many years ago (cannot even remember when) via the ‘free screening’ and joined up. At that time it was primarily for informational purposes in hopes for prevention and healing of some small skin cancers (and cancer runs rampant in my family).
