Hi Jimi,

Yesterday's eye health masterclass session was a big hit! We had a massive turnout. If you were one of the many people who wrote to me saying you couldn’t get on the Zoom, my sincere apologies.

The good news is that the recording is now available.

A few days ago I told you standard labs aren't built to catch dysfunction. Today I want to show you what they miss.

Your body has a control center called the hypothalamus. It runs a lot, including your hormones and your metabolism.

When it's doing its job, energy is steadier. Weight behaves. Your head is clearer. You wake up feeling like yourself.

When it's dysregulated, all of that goes sideways at once. And because it runs quietly in the background, it rarely gets checked. Each symptom gets handled on its own while the control center keeps running off.

Resetting it, a real Hypothalamus Reset, is what I want you excited about.

Here's the honest part. You can't reboot that computer if the cells are overloaded and toxic, or if chronic stress and trauma are still interfering. So three pieces have to happen together:

  1. Cellular healing and detoxification, so the cells can actually hold a reboot
  2. Nervous system regulation, including limbic system rewiring and brain retraining
  3. Resetting the hypothalamus itself. That's the reboot.
I always say the body has different size buckets. Physical, physiological, and psychological stress all land in the same bucket. The body doesn't sort them. It just adds them up.

Addressed together, these are what move the needle. Addressed one at a time, they don't hold. We haven't seen anyone else put all three together, in conventional care or even in functional medicine.

That's what we'll walk through live:

From Frogs to Families, Atrazine Is Disrupting Life: Time to Ban It

Syngenta/ChemChina’s atrazine is banned in more than 60 countries, but it is the second most widely used herbicide in the United States, and the number-one most commonly detected pesticide in tap water. Atrazine contaminates one-fifth of the surface water we draw from for drinking water.

Atrazine is best known for being the pesticide that turns male frogs into females. Atrazine disrupts the endocrine system, which regulates the development of the brain and the nervous system, as well as metabolism and blood sugar levels, along with reproduction.

Real-world studies have linked atrazine to:

  • gastroschisis, a birth defect where a baby’s intestines are outside the body
  • choanal atresia and stenosis, nasal birth defects that can block a newborn’s airway
  • breast cancer
  • low fertility, low sperm count, and poor semen quality
  • early menarche
  • irregular menstrual cycles and low estrogen levels
  • kidney failure
  • Parkinson’s disease

Animal studies reveal atrazine’s capacity to cause a range of other ailments, including neurodegenerative disease, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and obesity.

We shouldn’t tolerate any more birth defects, infertility, and chronic health conditions this toxin is causing.

CARE WHAT YOU WEAR

The True Frequency of Fabric

Juana M. Yupangco, LIFESTYLE.INQ:

“So, why do natural fibers actually feel and work better?

Natural fibers really do behave differently against your body, in ways science can measure:

  • Moisture handling: Cotton and linen are hydrophilic, pulling sweat away from skin and letting it evaporate, while most synthetics resist absorbing moisture.
  • Electrical behavior: As shown above, cotton and linen carry a genuinely different, generally more favorable, electrical signature against skin than synthetics.
  • Acoustic and tactile feedback: The sound and feel of fabric moving against itself has measurable, if modest, effects on nervous-system markers like brainwave patterns and skin conductance.
  • Lower irritant potential: Natural fibers are less associated with skin irritation and don’t shed the same microplastic particles synthetics do.”

The Protein Race: Big Food Files Thousands of New Patents

by Keith Nunes, Food Business News:

“Global patent applications for high protein foods reached 5,626 for the year ended June 30, an 80% increase compared with five years ago and up over the same period last year when there were 5,148 applications, according to the intellectual property law firm Mathys & Squire.

‘Demand for high-protein foods is so strong that manufacturers are looking for every possible way to add protein to their best-selling products,’ said Michael Stott, a partner at Mathys & Squire. ‘That has fueled a wave of innovation in the food industry.’

Companies with the most applications include Nestle SA (58), Cargill (46) and Arla Foods (28). Patent applications examples include a high-protein dough formulated with whey microparticles for use in pastries; a plant-based whipping cream with more than twice the protein content of traditional whipping cream; a protein ingredient developed from microorganisms that can be used on confectionery innovations.”

And a ready-to-drink, high-protein beverage that replicates the smell, texture and flavor of milk.

Editor’s Note:

Many of these patents cover new ingredients that will need a way onto store shelves. Too often, that way is a loophole that lets companies declare their own ingredients safe without FDA premarket review.

The Food & Drug Administration should close the “Generally Recognized as Safe” (GRAS) loophole and start enforcing the 1958 Food Additives Amendment as Congress intended.

Child Exploitation Still Rampant in Cocoa Industry

Adele Ferguson, ABC Listen:

Transcript:

“Melissa Clarke: For more than two decades, chocolate companies have promised to end child labour in cocoa supply chains, setting targets and investing billions of dollars. But a Four Corners investigation in Ghana has found fresh evidence it’s still happening, even though companies are using certification schemes to assure customers their chocolate is sustainable. Adele Ferguson reports.

Adele Ferguson: Sharp machetes slash weeds growing beneath cocoa trees in East Ghana’s sweltering sun. They’re being wielded by kids, one as young as 10 years old.

Insider: Children trapped in the same cycle I once endured…known labour before they have known pencils.

Adele Ferguson: That’s the insider who secretly captured footage of these children at work. We can’t name them for safety reasons. In another video, a boy with bare legs sprays the cocoa field with a large container of pesticides strapped to his back. Another clutches a basket brimming with cocoa bean pods that he balances on his head. We’re told these children work for as little as 25 cents an hour instead of going to school. Human rights lawyer Etelle Higonnet says this is widespread in the West African cocoa industry.”

Child labor is happening in chocolate operations all over the world.

Here’s a conscious way to turn any holiday into something good. Equal Exchange’s organic minis in milk and dark chocolate are Fair Trade certified and independently audited, under standards that include International Labor Organization policies against child and forced labor. Share them knowing your treats support small farmer co-ops. Stock up here.

FOOD SYSTEMS

Become a Citizen Consumer: Learn What’s Behind the Label

Rink Dickinson, Equal Exchange President and Co-founder:

“Our challenge now is to communicate the impact of our alternative model. Today, hundreds of companies use the fair trade name or seal, which may or may not involve a fair trade supply chain. Often the terms ‘fair trade’ or ‘direct trade’ are no more than marketing tools which don’t actually represent an alternative supply chain. Equal Exchange is too often confused in people’s minds with the sea of ethically sourced/fair trade/B Corp products and companies shouting out their commitments in the crowded market environment. But we, and the few alternative traders like us, are fundamentally different.

Supply chains are in vogue. They can help us understand the real difference in what we actually do and the difference between marketing and real change. All goods that we humans consume come from supply chains; most are conventional and corporate. But if Citizen-Consumers can learn the difference between genuine alternatives and impostors we can communicate it to others which creates a better future for small farmers and artisans, for the planet, and for human rights and democracy.”

From Frogs to Families, Atrazine Is Harming Us All: Stand With Us to Ban It

At the Organic Consumers Association (OCA), we’re working on many pressing issues, but our core mission remains the ongoing fight against the poisoning of our country with agrochemicals.

This week we are focusing on atrazine, the second most widely used herbicide in the United States and one of the pesticides most often found in our drinking water. Exposure to atrazine has been linked to an increased risk of cancer, reproductive problems, and horrific birth defects. It’s also contaminating groundwater and surface water, putting aquatic ecosystems at risk and causing developmental and reproductive issues in wildlife.

As Dr. Tyrone B. Hayes found, atrazine can chemically castrate frogs at just 0.1 parts per billion. The legal limit for atrazine in U.S. drinking water is 3 ppb.

Atrazine is banned in more than 60 countries, but it’s still widely used here. The federal government isn’t protecting us, so we’re taking this fight to state legislators.

This Friday, October 16, World Food Day, our sister organization Regeneration International is hosting the People’s Food Summit. Farmers, researchers, and activists from every continent will share the regenerative practices that are healing soil, water, and communities. The grassroots are rising, and you can join us live on YouTube and Facebook.

Can you contribute to our efforts to ban atrazine and protect our waterways? Please take action: Tell your state legislators to ban atrazine!

And if you can, please help us continue this work by making a donation today.

From the Farm to Your Door: How Our Global Food System Exploits Workers

Joseph Lee, Grist:

“A report released Monday says that exploitation is deeply embedded in the global food system, leaving many of the 1.4 billion people who produce, process, distribute, and deliver food poorly paid, inadequately protected, and vulnerable to abuse. Climate change and a global affordability crisis are intensifying those pressures, according to the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems, or IPES-Food, an international food policy research organization.

Although the document does not specifically focus on Indigenous peoples, it finds that many of the forces driving that exploitation have roots in the colonialism, land dispossession, forced labor, and racialized labor systems that have long harmed Indigenous communities worldwide.

‘Here we are in the United States, a country that’s founded on stealing land and the import of enslaved people to be able to make agriculture and agricultural labor possible and cheap,’ said Raj Patel, an IPES-Food expert and a professor at the University of Texas at Austin.”

And the legacy of that is still with us.

NEW RESEARCH

British Colonizers Thought They Were Protecting Forests by Stopping Indigenous Burning. It’s Now Backfiring.

Vishwam Sankaran, The Independent:

“Alterations made to Australia’s forests during British colonial rule have amplified the effects of climate change and rendered the country more prone to bushfires, a new study suggests.

The research provides evidence for the value of cultural burning by Indigenous communities, scientists from the University of Melbourne say.

‘Climate records show seasons of comparably dangerous fire weather such as those seen during Ash Wednesday and Black Saturday reoccurred in the region repeatedly before colonisation, yet the open landscape maintained by cultural burning protected the land from catastrophic fire,’ Michael-Shawn Fletcher, an author of the new study, said.

When colonization ended that care, the forest expanded and thickened across the region, loading the landscape with fuel. It is that transformation that has handed control of fire to climate.”

Learn more.

Good news: Indigenous fire practice returns to Minnesota Point after 180 years.

Claudia Sheinbaum Just Put Qigong on the World Stage

Anthony Korahais, Flowing Zen:

“It’s obvious to me that a sea change is coming. We’re witnessing a profound shift in perspective about qigong and also tai chi. President Sheinbaum is the latest example of this.

She’s a result of this shift, but she will also help to bring it about. Highlighting how little-known the discipline is in Mexico, she publicly proposed establishing an official Mexican national federation to promote qigong nationwide. If this happens, the effects will ripple out to all of North and South America.

As a direct result of her announcement, I predict we’ll see more politicians, celebrities, and athletes taking up qigong. The simple fact that the president of the 11th largest nation on Earth—and an environmental scientist—practices qigong will inspire others to take it up.

It may also inspire those who are secretly practicing qigong to speak up about it.”

President Sheinbaum just did what hundreds of books and podcasts couldn’t: she showed the world that an ancient internal practice belongs dead center in modern, high-stress life.
