A single fuzzy spot on bread is enough for USDA guidance to say the entire loaf should be discarded, not trimmed.
The reason is hidden beneath the surface.
Bread is porous, so mold can send microscopic rootlike threads deep into the food before colored growth becomes obvious.
Those threads, called hyphae, form much of the mold’s body while the visible patch contains spores and surface structures.
USDA specifically lists bread and baked goods among foods to discard because contamination can extend below the surface.
Moldy foods may also harbor invisible bacteria, meaning clean-looking slices cannot be assumed safe.
Some molds can produce mycotoxins, toxic compounds that the FDA monitors in grains and other foods.
USDA also advises against sniffing moldy food because spores can cause respiratory problems.
With bread, cutting away what you see does not remove what may already be hidden.

They ate the same amount of food...and still lost weight

[td]
Hey Jimi,

Here's a question I hear all the time:

"How am I supposed to lose weight if I'm not counting calories?"

A brand-new study just answered it.

Researchers followed 244 adults for 16 weeks. One group was never told to eat less. They never counted a calorie. They ate about the same amount of food as before.

And they lost more weight.

Hi Jimi,

In a moment I'll share some fascinating insights on why you may want to eat more RED GRAPES to help protect your brain and memory as you age — including some very encouraging research involving older adults already experiencing memory problems.

First, though, please do not miss this clearly written and very helpful new guide — one of 4 new BONUS guides you're getting as a gift, as you are about to see...

Click here now for EAT FOR A SHARPER MIND: 16 AFFORDABLE SUPERMARKET FOODS THAT BOOST BRAIN HEALTH

Veteran health researcher and nutrition expert Sarah Otto is giving you this (and three other new guides) today in support of her forthcoming FREE Gut-Aging Solution.

And this is an especially important guide because, as we get older, few things are more precious than our ability to remember clearly, think sharply, and stay mentally independent.

The encouraging news?

Research increasingly shows that certain foods you can easily buy at your neighborhood supermarket can help protect your brain against age-related decline.

And as Sarah explains, your gut health plays an important role in your brain health, too.

In this brand-new guide, she reveals 16 affordable, everyday foods that can best help nourish your brain, support memory and concentration, and protect against some of the processes involved in cognitive aging.

You'll discover, for example...

→ The everyday leafy greens linked to an astonishing 11-year difference in cognitive aging — and how much researchers found people were eating

→ The delicious fruits associated with up to 2½ years less memory decline in a study involving more than 16,000 women

→ The controversial beverage associated with a substantially lower risk of dementia in a long-term study

→ The common seeds packed with nutrients your brain needs for memory, mood, and healthy nerve function

→ The delicious treat that may improve blood flow to your brain — and what to look for when choosing it

→ And of course, RED GRAPES — which have some fascinating brain-health benefits of their own (see further below)...

Get all 16 brain-boosting foods — plus your other 3 new BONUS guides and FREE access to The Gut-Aging Solution — right here.

Okay, Jimi, now let's talk briefly and specifically about...

RED GRAPES!

Most people think of grapes as a sweet, refreshing snack.

But those little red and purple fruits contain some remarkably interesting compounds that researchers have been studying for their ability to protect the aging brain.

One of the most fascinating is RESVERATROL.

You may have heard of resveratrol before, especially in connection with red wine.

But here's something important to know:

Red grapes themselves contain resveratrol, particularly in their skins.

And resveratrol is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier — the protective barrier that regulates what substances can enter your brain.

Laboratory research has found that resveratrol may help reduce the buildup of amyloid-beta, a protein associated with Alzheimer's disease.

That's intriguing enough.

But here's where the research becomes especially interesting...

In a human study, researchers gave Concord grape juice to older adults who were already experiencing mild memory problems.

And the participants showed improvements in memory performance!

Now, that was a relatively small study, and we certainly need more research. But I find it encouraging that something as familiar as grapes is being investigated for its potential to support memory as we age.

And resveratrol is only part of the story.

Red grapes also contain other valuable plant compounds, including quercetin and flavonoids, that have been studied for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and brain-protective properties.

In fact, the combination of these compounds may help:

  • Protect brain cells against oxidative damage
  • Support healthy blood flow to the brain
  • Support learning and memory
  • Help regulate inflammation, including processes involved in brain aging
And here's another fascinating little fact...

Grapes produce resveratrol to defend themselves against stress!

When grape plants face threats such as harsh weather, ultraviolet light, or pests, they can increase their production of this protective compound.

Pretty remarkable, right?

As for HOW to enjoy more red grapes, this is about as easy as healthy eating gets.

Wash them and enjoy them fresh, toss them into salads, or freeze them for a refreshing treat.

And remember to eat the skins, since that's where much of the resveratrol is concentrated.

One more recommendation: Because grapes can carry relatively high pesticide residues, choose organic when practical.
