Okay, Jimi, now let's talk briefly and specifically about...
RED GRAPES!
Most people think of grapes as a sweet, refreshing snack.
But those little red and purple fruits contain some remarkably interesting compounds that researchers have been studying for their ability to protect the aging brain.
One of the most fascinating is
RESVERATROL.
You may have heard of resveratrol before, especially in connection with red wine.
But here's something important to know:
Red grapes themselves contain resveratrol, particularly in their skins.
And resveratrol is capable of crossing the
blood-brain barrier — the protective barrier that regulates what substances can enter your brain.
Laboratory research has found that resveratrol may help reduce the buildup of
amyloid-beta, a protein associated with Alzheimer's disease.
That's intriguing enough.
But here's where the research becomes especially interesting...
In a human study, researchers gave
Concord grape juice to older adults who were already experiencing mild memory problems.
And the participants showed improvements in memory performance!
Now, that was a relatively small study, and we certainly need more research. But I find it encouraging that something as familiar as grapes is being investigated for its potential to support memory as we age.
And resveratrol is only part of the story.
Red grapes also contain other valuable plant compounds, including
quercetin and flavonoids, that have been studied for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and brain-protective properties.
In fact, the combination of these compounds may help:
- Protect brain cells against oxidative damage
- Support healthy blood flow to the brain
- Support learning and memory
- Help regulate inflammation, including processes involved in brain aging
And here's another fascinating little fact...
Grapes produce resveratrol to defend themselves against stress!
When grape plants face threats such as harsh weather, ultraviolet light, or pests, they can increase their production of this protective compound.
Pretty remarkable, right?
As for HOW to enjoy more red grapes, this is about as easy as healthy eating gets.
Wash them and enjoy them fresh, toss them into salads, or freeze them for a refreshing treat.
And remember to
eat the skins, since that's where much of the resveratrol is concentrated.
One more recommendation: Because grapes can carry relatively high pesticide residues, choose organic when practical.
